English-speaking dietitian in Luxembourg. Expat guide to nutrition consultations, CNS reimbursement (88–100%), referrals and eligibility.
Luxembourg is one of the most international countries in Europe. Nearly half of its residents hold a foreign passport and English is the working language across finance, EU institutions and technology. Yet most public health information — from GP referrals to CNS reimbursement leaflets — is published only in French, German or Luxembourgish, which makes it hard for new arrivals to know where to start when they need nutrition care.
A state-registered dietitian-nutritionist (diététicien-nutritionniste) is a paramedical profession regulated by the Luxembourg Ministry of Health. Unlike unregulated nutrition coaches, a dietitian holds a recognised university degree, is registered with the Ministry, and is bound by professional secrecy and evidence-based practice. Only state-registered dietitians can bill the Caisse Nationale de Santé (CNS) on a medical prescription.
Clinical indications covered by the CNS include type 1, type 2 and gestational diabetes, overweight and obesity (BMI ≥ 27 with comorbidity or BMI ≥ 30), hypertension and the DASH diet, high cholesterol and triglycerides (dyslipidemia), menopause and thyroid disorders, irritable bowel syndrome with low-FODMAP protocols, food allergies and intolerances (lactose, fructose, gluten), pregnancy and breastfeeding follow-up, oncology nutrition, bariatric-surgery follow-up, and eating disorders (anorexia, bulimia, binge-eating).
CNS reimbursement covers 88% of the fee for adults and 100% for minors and recognised long-term conditions when the consultation follows a medical prescription. The number of sessions per year depends on the diagnosis and is set by the prescribing doctor. You pay the cabinet directly, keep the receipt, and send the receipt with the prescription to the CNS for reimbursement to your bank account.
